Long gone were the days when people used to show admiration through maximum effort such as traveling miles to visit the apple of their eye. However, we are not saying that the old tradition of courtship is totally gone, it’s just that most people prefer to be practical, especially during these difficult times.

The only thing that we could do is look at the elderly couples who used to live their own love stories just like “Romeo and Juliet.”

One of the many examples of true love was this elderly couple who had been married for 71 years.

Herbert DeLaigle, 94, and Marilyn Frances DeLaigle, 88, happily lived their married life for over seven decades!

Their love story began when they met at a Waynesboro cafe named White Way Cafe. The two were just youngsters back then, Frances was 16 and Herbert was 22.

“I kept seeing her going in and out, in and out and I had my eyes set on her. And then I finally got up the nerve to ask her if she would go out with me sometime,” Herbert said in his interview back in 2018 with WRDW/WAGT.

Frances wasn’t able to say no so off they went on their first date at the movies. Then after a year, Herbert realized that it was Frances whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Soon, he asked the love of his life to marry him.

“I asked her will she have me as her husband and she said, of course,” Herbert said.

Frances said yes, but the wedding almost didn’t happen.

She revealed that Herbert “was always late.” In fact, according to Herbert, on their wedding day, the preacher almost didn’t marry them because they arrived an hour late. Luckily, they managed to convince the preacher who then rushed through the entire wedding ceremony.

“$5 is all I paid for her,” Herbert jokingly said.

Their life was filled with laughter and joy even to their 90s. Frances said that Herbert’s sense of humor kept her smile and laugh all throughout their marriage. She also shared that her husband “was always loving and patient and good-hearted.” When asked about their secret, they said that it’s to always “show your love” and “be there for each other.”

The couple was blessed with 6 children, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Unfortunately, in the early morning of Friday, June 12 of 2019, Herbert passed away at 2:20. Then after 12 hours, Frances also passed away at 2:20 in the afternoon. They’re indeed inseparable and not even death was able to set them apart from each other.
